What Is Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the mandible, or lower jaw, to the temporal bone located at the side of the head. It acts like a hinge, allowing our jaws to move side to side and up and down so we can use our mouths to eat, talk, yawn and make facial expressions. Although TMJ is actually a body part, the acronym is commonly used to refer to a group of conditions that affect this complicated jaw joint, causing pain and discomfort to the head, ears, neck and shoulders. These conditions are also collectively referred to as temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD.
Our dentists and team are consistently working with various individuals who are suffering from TMJ. With treatment for temporomandibular joint syndrome, our patients are able to relieve the pain of headaches and tinnitus, among other discomforts.
